Two women reported missing while crossing river in Imphal, search underway

Imphal, Oct 26: Two women have been reported missing after being swept away by flash flood current while trying to cross Thliru stream near Challou river in Poi village about 160 km from Imphal, Manipur. The unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon around 4:30 pm under Chingai Sub Division in Unkhrul District, Manipur due to the incessant rainfall in the district.

According to a report received by the media, the two women were swept away by the current while trying to cross the channel on their way back home after coming from the paddy field for rice harvesting.

The missing woman has been identified as Ngamreila, 30 years, and Ramreila, 34 years. Both women are from Poi Village. Villagers from Poi, Wahong, Tusom, Chingai Kuingai, Junlou, Sorapung and Jessammi are on the search for the missing women at the river bank of Challou river.

Also according to reports, it was said that there is no suspension bridge built above the Challou river connecting the village. It may be mentioned that villagers of Poi have approached the state government to build a suspension bridge above Challou river connecting Poi village for the many years, but time and time again, the ruling government has failed to meet their necessity demand till date.

Former MLA cum Former Deputy Speaker MK. Preshow Shimray has submitted a written letter to Manipur Chief Minister and DC Ukhrul district in connection with the unfortunate incident and the grievances the Poi villagers had to suffer.
