Guwahati, April 18: Two young men were killed on the spot after a speeding Bolero allegedly rammed into their stationary motorcycle at Lajum village in Kakopathar area of Tinsukia district late Friday night, amid ongoing Bihu celebrations.
The deceased have been identified as Pranajit Das, a resident of Kakopathar and goalkeeper of the Kakopathar Football Coaching Centre, and Shashank Moran of Teji village.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were sitting on a motorcycle parked by the roadside when a high-speed Bolero (registration number 01 V 0399), reportedly coming from the Kakopathar side, crashed into them.
Both sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Locals rushed them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
The driver of the Bolero, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, has been detained by Doomdooma Police, and the vehicle has been seized.
The incident triggered widespread anger in the area, with locals staging a road blockade in Kakopathar from early Saturday morning.
Protesters burnt tyres and demanded strict action against the accused, along with compensation and rehabilitation support for the victims’ families.
Tension prevails near Kakopathar Police Station along National Highway 15 (NH-15), where the blockade continues, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded on both sides and disrupting traffic movement.
