UDP mourns passing of founding leader Sawian, calls him ‘true architect of UDP’

Shillong, Jun 9: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed deep grief over the passing of HAD Sawian, the party’s first and former general secretary and one of its founding pillars since 1997.

In a condolence message, the UDP said Sawian served the party with dedication and shaped generations of workers through his commitment to regionalism and the aspirations of Meghalaya’s people.

“The United Democratic Party, Meghalaya, is deeply saddened by the passing of Bah HAD Sawian, the first and former General Secretary of the UDP. Bah Sawian was one of the founding pillars of our party since its establishment in 1997. As General Secretary, he served with unwavering dedication, wisdom, and an abiding commitment to the cause of regionalism and the aspirations of the people of Meghalaya. His counsel guided and shaped generations of UDP workers, and his example endures as a beacon for all who serve this party and this land,” the party stated.

The UDP described him as a man of deep principle and selfless service who helped build the party “brick by brick” and inspired workers to uphold grassroots democracy and tribal identity.

“He was a man of deep principle, selfless service, and profound love for Meghalaya. From its earliest days, he helped build this party brick by brick, and in doing so, inspired countless workers to give their finest to the cause of our people. In strengthening grassroots democracy and upholding the pride of our tribal identity, his contributions are beyond measure,” the message said.

Calling him a mentor and guardian, the party said his legacy would continue to guide UDP workers.

“In his demise, the United Democratic Party has lost a mentor, a guardian, and a true son of the hills. The void he leaves behind cannot be filled. Yet his memory shall remain our strength, and his legacy shall continue to inspire. ‘A true Architect of UDP — your service to the party and the people of Meghalaya shall never be forgotten,’” the condolence note read.

UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh and general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne conveyed heartfelt condolences to Bah Sawian’s bereaved family, praying for his soul’s eternal peace and strength for the family to bear the loss.
