Meghalaya Govt to end SAI Computer contract in SWKH blocks, CM gives assurance to NPP leaders

Must read

Shillong, Jun 9: The Meghalaya government has agreed to terminate the contract of SAI Computer Ltd for managing power supply in Mawsynram, Ranikor and Mawphlang, following sustained pressure from NPP leaders and public complaints, party representatives said Tuesday.

A delegation of NPP leaders from the three constituencies, led by former Mawsynram MLA H.M. Shangpliang met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma twice this month to demand an immediate exit of the company.

Shangpliang said the first meeting was held on June 5, where the Chief Minister promised to review the issue in detail.

A follow-up meeting on Monday night secured a commitment from the government to act.

“We are here as leaders of the NPP from Mawsynram and Ranikor constituencies and from Mawphlang constituency. We held a meeting regarding SAI Computer which is managing power supply in these three constituencies. We want to inform that following up on this, we the leaders of the NPP met the Chief Minister and placed a demand to immediately terminate the contract of SAI Computer Ltd which is managing power in our areas,” he said.

“We were able to follow up with the Chief Minister last night and we met the Chief Minister on the 5th and he said he would examine the matter thoroughly, and in whatever form he will accept our demand. Last night our group met the Chief Minister again and followed up with him and the Chief Minister agreed to terminate the contract of SAI. We believe the process to terminate is underway and in the next few days an order will likely be issued for SAI to exit from our areas,” Shangpliang added.

Mawsynram MDC Alvin Sawkmie, who accompanied the delegation, said the Chief Minister’s assurance came after the government took note of public grievances. He urged residents of Mawsynram, Mawphlang and Ranikor blocks to remain patient until the formal order is issued.

“I want to thank the Chief Minister after we met him on the 5th at his residence and due to reasons that could not be avoided we could not finalize it on that day. Yesterday we met him again and the good news is that he gave an assurance from his side that he will terminate the SAI company from Mawsynram, Mawphlang and Ranikor blocks, all of which are under Mawsynram sub-division. So I request the public to be patient. In the next few days, as I have explained, it will be terminated, please be patient. We are confident that the Government has taken it seriously after they heard the grievances of the people. So from the Government side they have promised and will complete this work in a few days,” Sawkmie said.

According to the NPP leaders, the termination process has begun and an official order directing SAI Computer Ltd to withdraw from the three blocks is expected soon.
