Shillong, May 25: The height restriction on the Umiam Bridge will not be lifted, with officials saying the measure is needed to protect the bridge and dam structure in the long run.
Commissioner & Secretary in-charge Power Sanjay Goyal on Monday said the alternate bridge was built specifically to address this concern.
“So, the height restrictions will continue and this will continue as we have mentioned in the past also that we have continuing keeping in mind the long-term safety of the Umiam Bridge and the Dam and that was the reason that this alternate bridge has come up,” he said.
Under the restriction, vehicles taller than 3.2 meters must divert to the new bridge.
Earlier, Goyal noted, such vehicles had no nearby option.
“So, the other vehicles which are higher than that height of 3.2 meters, since there was no alternative earlier, have to take a longer route via Mawryngkneng or via Diengpasoh,” he explained.
He added that the alternate route is now the preferred option for heavy vehicles and matches the distance of the original crossing.
“Now, this is a shorter route as lengthy as the current Bridge route was there, so this one good alternative has come up and I am happy to tell that most of the night super have started using that route and we have reactivated the IBST also,” Goyal said.
