Upper Assam celebrates 17th Chavang Kut with cultural splendour in Dibrugarh

DIBRUGARH, Nov 1: The 17th Upper Assam Chavang Kut, the grand harvest festival of the Kuki community, was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at the Sahitya Sabha Hall, Dibrugarh, on Friday, drawing a large gathering and showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage.

Held under the theme “Stronger Together: Honouring Our Past, Building Our Future,” the celebration reflected unity, gratitude, and cultural pride among the Chin-Kuki-Mizo groups residing across Upper Assam.

Pu Kaikhohao Doungel, Superintendent, Central Goods & Service Tax and Customs, graced the event as Chief Guest, while Dr. Bharati Dutta, retired Associate Professor of DHSK College and noted author, attended as Guest of Honour. The programme was presided over by Dr. Lamkholal Doungel, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, DHSK College, and Adviser of Kuki Inpi Assam, the apex Kuki body in the state. Pu Letkhokam Vaiphei served as the Kut Pa (Host) of the celebration.

The event began with the formal inauguration by the Kut Pa, who extended warm Chavang Kut greetings, followed by welcome addresses from Pu Sangboi Doungel and Pa Jampu Guite, Chairman and Secretary of the Kut Celebration Committee, respectively. They urged the community to uphold the true spirit of Kut — celebrating unity through dance, song, and togetherness.

The festival featured an impressive line-up of traditional dances, folk songs, and contemporary performances, captivating the audience with their rhythm and colour. The day-long programme was smoothly conducted by comperes Pa Jankhogin Haokip, Pa Mangboi Lupheng, Nungah Jefani Changsan, and Gl. Minlal Chongloi.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Pu Kaikhohao Doungel reminisced about earlier Chavang Kut celebrations among the Chin-Kuki-Mizo communities and underscored the importance of preserving one’s cultural identity amid modernity and global change.

Guest of Honour Dr. Bharati Dutta lauded the celebration as a reflection of the community’s unity, warmth, and vibrant traditions, while Dr. Lamkholal Doungel, in his presidential address, remarked that “tradition and culture are not merely in the dress we wear, but in the spirit we nurture and impart to the younger generation.”

The joyous festival concluded with community feasting, traditional dances, and a renewed spirit of togetherness and gratitude, reaffirming the enduring cultural bonds that define Chavang Kut in Upper Assam.
