Tura, March 31: A mob of angry villagers gheraoed the block development officer of Resubelpara Block in North Garo Hills raising slogans accusing her of failing to provide the required mandays for job card holders under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme during a Social Audit hearing on schemes on Thursday.
The villagers were peeved that many had not received what they perceive should have been more days of work under the 100 days a year scheme.
Some claimed that they had received a meagre 30-40 days of work in the entire year and blamed the block officials for failing to give more mandays of work.
The lady BDO tried to reason with them and cited various technicalities involving job cards and mandays and assured to look into the issue, but it failed to cut any ice with the angry villagers.
As tempers flared, police had to be called in to control and pacify the angry villagers who demanded answers as to why so little mandays had been created and blamed the BDO for the mess.
The deputy commissioner R P Marak informed that he has directed the Project Director of DRDA to review their claims and submit a report at the earliest.
