Tura , July 19: The West Garo Hills District Swimming Association (WGHDSA) conducted its first trial for the upcoming 2027 National Games at the Rongkhon Swimming Complex on Saturday.

The trial aimed to identify and train young swimmers from across the Garo Hills region in preparation for the state-level trials in Shillong. A total of 17 swimmers participated, most of them from Tura, with a few from Rajabala and Dadenggre. Among them were five female participants.

The second and final day of the trials is scheduled for July 26. WGHDSA officials are hopeful that more swimmers from remote areas will join to showcase their talent.

Speaking to Hub News, one of the young swimmers said, “I am confident that with proper training, we can win medals for the state. Right now, we are just swimming.”

Officials said some promising swimmers were already identified during the first day. Even those who didn’t perform well were encouraged to keep training at the Rongkhon Swimming Complex.

Motivating the swimmers, officials told them, “If you win medals for the state and qualify, the government will definitely reward you. So focus on your training and make the most of this opportunity.”

WGHDSA believes Garo Hills holds great potential due to its natural water bodies and raw swimming talent. Vice President Sengrak Marak said, “We are getting swimmers who have the strength, but they need proper timing, technique, and training to compete in bigger competitions where only strength is not enough.”

He also noted that the two trial dates, spaced six days apart, were planned to give swimmers from far-flung areas enough time to attend.

WGHDSA aims to train and field swimmers in all four main competition categories: Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly.

Four officials were present to conduct Saturday’s trials.
