Dibrugarh, May 20: In a remarkable endeavour to set a Guinness World Record, two women have commenced a tandem bicycle journey spanning approximately 4,000 kilometres from Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh to Koteshwar in Gujarat.
The cyclists, Dr. Meera Velankar, a scientist and Guinness World Record holder, and Dr. Manisha Waghmare, an ophthalmologist and fitness enthusiast, were ceremonially flagged off by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on May 15 from Kibithu, India’s easternmost road-connected village.
Traversing through seven Indian states, the duo aims to promote women’s empowerment, environmental consciousness, and physical fitness through their expedition. On May 19, they reached Dibrugarh, Assam, known as the tea capital of India, marking a significant milestone in their journey.
Dr. Velankar brings extensive experience in tandem cycling, having covered over 25,000 kilometres since 2015. Dr. Waghmare complements the team with her passion for trekking and fitness.
Their journey not only tests their endurance and determination but also inspires to inspire others, especially women, to pursue their goals and embrace sustainable modes of transportation.
The current Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation by tandem bicycle (female) is held by Rachael Marsden and Catherine Dixon from the UK, who completed their journey in 263 days, 8 hours, and 7 minutes in the annals of world records while championing noble causes.
