World Mental Health Day organised in WGH, students briefed on drug abuse and mental health

Tura, Oct 10: The District Mental Health Programme, West Garo Hills, Tura, organised a programme on World Mental Health on Tuesday at the District Auditorium, Tura with the theme “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.”

In this event, students from three schools participated, namely, United Christian Academy, Tura; Christian Boys Secondary School; and Riverdale School, Tura. They were informed about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of mental health.

The programme started with a welcome speech by Narbecca G. Momin, Clinical Psychologist, DMHP (District Mental Health Programme), West Garo Hills, followed by a group dance performance by Trishna & Friends, then a talk on substance misuse by Amesa Chesrame S. Sangma, Counsellor, Addiction Treatment Facility, Tura Civil Hospital, where she explained the dangers of and prevention against drug addiction.

After the talk, there was a skit performance by Don Bosco College students about mental health, followed by a talk on the Rights of Mentally Ill Person by Narbecca G. Momin, Clinical Psychologist, DMHP, West Garo Hills, where she explained about the rights given to people with mental illness, the dos and don’ts of treatment towards people with mental illness, and also gave awareness about POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offence), and then everyone joined together for a song, and lastly, the programme ended with a vote of thanks by Bilrak D Marak, Psychiatric Social Worker, DMHP, West Garo Hills.

On speaking with Hub News, Narbecca G. Momin, Clinical Psychologist, DMHP, West Garo Hills, said, “From our department, we are trying our best to conduct awareness programmes or mental health camps at the community level, in schools, and in organisations. Of course, since we are a small team, we cannot reach from corner to corner and give awareness to every human being who is living in Garo Hills, but we are trying our best. That’s why we also need people’s support to come and spread the knowledge that they get from our programmes.”
