Guwahati, Oct 3: A 26-year-old man was lynched on Thursday evening after he requested that a Zubeen Garg song be played during celebrations at a Durga Puja pandal in Bamunimaidam, Guwahati.
The victim, identified as Avinash Rajak, had asked for Garg’s songs while dancing at the Kalibari Jagriti Sangha Railway Colony Puja mandap. His request reportedly angered a group of around 20–25 youths, allegedly led by Sujit Sarkar and Ratul Bora, who launched a brutal attack on him.
Rajak sustained grievous injuries and was rushed to KGMT Hospital in Gitanagar, where he was declared dead. His death has triggered tension in the locality.
The victim’s family has lodged a complaint at Chanmari Police Station. Police said an investigation is underway to identify and arrest all those involved.
In a separate incident on the same day, a youth was stabbed during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession in Dibrugarh.
The injured, Ashish Pandey, a resident of Graham Bazar, alleged that he was attacked by one Sujit Shah in the Phoolbagan area. Pandey, who is undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), claimed that Shah was angered after being confronted over selling narcotics in the locality.
“I don’t know why he called me during the procession. Suddenly, he stabbed me, and I noticed blood flowing from my stomach. We had earlier opposed him selling ganja and other narcotic items in our area. Out of grudge, he attacked me,” Pandey told reporters from his hospital bed.
An FIR has been registered at Dibrugarh Police Station. Shah has been arrested and taken into custody for interrogation.
