Shillong, May 23: As part of the 110th anniversary celebrations of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), the North Eastern Regional Centre (NERC), Shillong, hosted a regional-level screening of a 110-hour Hackathon aimed at addressing biodiversity challenges in the Northeast.
Themed ‘Northeast Biodiversity’, the Hackathon was designed to encourage tech-driven, innovative solutions to conserve and manage the region’s rich biodiversity. While over ten participants had registered from across the country, the timing of university examinations limited active participation. Eventually, a single team from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Damanbha Lyngdoh, represented the region and presented well-researched ideas on biodiversity conservation.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Jennifer Lyngdoh, Scientist-E and Officer-in-Charge of ZSI Shillong. Dr. Uttam Saikia, Scientist-D and nodal officer for the programme, provided an overview of the Hackathon.
A panel of five experts, including external members Dr. Krishna Upadhaya (NEHU) and Shri Kanhaiya Lal Chaudhary (Lady Keane College), alongside ZSI scientists, evaluated the team’s presentation. Participation certificates were awarded in recognition of the team’s efforts.
The screening was part of a nationwide selection process across 16 regional centres of ZSI. The St. Anthony’s team’s score will be compared with teams from other centres to decide entries for the national round.
The event also witnessed the presence of faculty and students from various Shillong-based institutions, adding to the academic enthusiasm and collaborative spirit.
