Guwahati, Jan 16: The family of singer Zubeen Garg has asked Central and Assam governments to closely follow coronial proceedings in Singapore into his death last year.
In a statement issued on Thursday, his wife Garima Saikia said the family’s search for answers had been “lawful, relentless and ongoing across jurisdictions”.
Her remarks came a day after Singapore’s Coroner’s Court was told that Mr Garg, 53, drowned while swimming near Lazarus Island on 19 September 2025. The court heard that he had allegedly consumed alcohol and declined to wear a life jacket before entering the sea, according to testimony by a Singapore Police Coast Guard officer.
The family said their concerns arose only after videos from the yacht began circulating on social media several days after the incident.
An FIR was later registered in Assam and a Special Investigation Team set up. The Assam Police subsequently filed a chargesheet of more than 2,500 pages, invoking provisions relating to murder.
The family said Singapore authorities had initiated proceedings independently following the death, with the Indian High Commission in Singapore coordinating legal and post-mortem processes.
They added that all communication with Singapore Police was conducted through official channels and was not made public while investigations were ongoing.
At the Coroner’s Court, the family said questions had been placed on record about safety arrangements on the yacht, Mr Garg’s physical condition, the sequence of events before he entered the water, the response when he appeared to be in distress, and the timing and adequacy of medical assistance.
The family has appealed to the governments of India and Assam to ensure the proceedings in Singapore are closely monitored and that all relevant facts are placed before the court.
They said their pursuit of justice remains unchanged.
