Guwahati, April 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate, launch and lay the foundation stone for projects worth over ₹4,000 crore during his two-day visit to Sikkim beginning April 27, marking a major development push in the Himalayan state as it celebrates 50 years of statehood.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations at Paljor Stadium on April 28, where he will unveil projects spanning infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, tourism, environment, and agriculture—aimed at accelerating inclusive growth in the state.
A key highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of the Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park—an Orchid Experience Centre in Gangtok—showcasing Sikkim’s rich ecological heritage and positioning it as a biodiversity and eco-tourism hub.
In a significant push to healthcare, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a 100-bedded Ayurveda hospital in Yangang (Namchi district) and inaugurate a 30-bedded Sowa Rigpa hospital at NIT Deorali, strengthening access to traditional medicine systems.
The education sector will see multiple inaugurations, including the permanent campus of Sikkim University, new medical and professional colleges, model schools, and IT-enabled infrastructure across 160 schools—marking one of the largest education upgrades in the state.
]To improve connectivity, foundation stones will be laid for two major steel arch bridges over the Teesta river, linking key districts. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the upgraded Birdhang–Namchi road, expected to significantly ease inter-district travel and boost economic activity.
Urban infrastructure will also get a push with the inauguration of administrative buildings, housing projects for urban poor and police personnel, and new public utility spaces in Gangtok.
With Sikkim positioning itself as a model for sustainable development, projects targeting river pollution abatement in Singtam and Gangtok will be launched to improve urban sanitation and river health.
Tourism infrastructure—including redevelopment of Gangtok’s Ridge area, eco-tourism facilities in Soreng, and infrastructure linked to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra—will also be unveiled, aimed at boosting pilgrimage and high-value tourism.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Sikkim IFFCO processing plant to strengthen agro-processing and farmer incomes, along with new sports infrastructure to promote youth engagement.
Officials said the scale and diversity of projects reflect a “holistic development roadmap” for Sikkim, balancing infrastructure growth with ecological sustainability.
The visit is being seen as a significant milestone in Sikkim’s golden jubilee year and a signal of continued focus on the Northeast as a key pillar of India’s development strategy.
