Guwahati, Oct 16: The Government Railway Police (GRP) detained 11 Rohingyas from an Agartala-bound train at New Bongaigaon railway station on Wednesday night.
The detainees have been identified as Ismail Azad, Abdul, Muhammad Nur, Ashila Begum, Muhammad Anis, Nur Alam, Nur Kalima, Safa, Rima, and Nur Sahid.
Speaking to reporters, one of the detainees, Ismail Azad, said, “We were coming from Hyderabad and going to Bangladesh. We had been working as labourers in Hyderabad. In 2013, we came to India from Bangladesh.”
Security agencies have launched an investigation into the possible involvement of human trafficking networks suspected of facilitating such illegal cross-border movements.
Legal proceedings under the Foreigners Act have been initiated, and all detainees are currently in custody for further interrogation.
Cross-border infiltration remains a major concern in Assam, and authorities have intensified measures to curb illegal entry into the state.
