Guwahati, June 11: Thirteen Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, were detained by police on Wednesday in the Katigorah Kalain and Jalalpur areas of Assam’s Cachar district while reportedly trying to return to Bangladesh after living illegally in India for years.
Local residents became suspicious after spotting the group wandering in the area and promptly handed them over to the police.
During interrogation, it was confirmed that all 13 individuals had illegally entered India and had been residing in different parts of the country for an extended period. “They were planning to return to Bangladesh when locals nabbed them,” a police official said.
A source revealed that a well-organised network is believed to be aiding the illegal movement of Bangladeshi nationals across the border through this region.
The incident comes amid intensified nationwide operations by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs targeting illegal immigration, with heightened vigilance across border districts like Cachar.
