Tura, March 10: The district administration of West Garo Hills has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the entire district in view of the prevailing law and order situation and apprehensions of disturbances to public peace and safety.
The order was issued by Vibhor Aggarwal, District Magistrate of West Garo Hills on Tuesday under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, following reports indicating a likelihood of disturbances that could endanger human life and property in the district.
According to the order, the curfew came into force at 12:00 AM on March 10, 2026, and will remain in effect until 12:00 AM on March 11, 2026.
During this period, no person is permitted to move outside their residence within the jurisdiction of West Garo Hills district.
The district administration stated that the measure was taken as an immediate preventive step to maintain public order and prevent any disturbance to public tranquillity.
However, the curfew order exempts certain categories, including police and security personnel on duty, magistrates and government officials engaged in official duties, medical personnel, ambulances and emergency services, as well as individuals involved in essential services as notified by the district administration.
All law enforcement agencies and executive magistrates in the district have been directed to strictly enforce the curfew order.
The administration further warned that any violation of the order will attract penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and other applicable laws.
Officials stated that the order has been issued as an urgent measure to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the district.
