40 rare exotic wild animals seized in Assam

Guwahati, Sept 8: In one of the biggest haul of illegally trafficked exotic animals, Assam police, on a tip off, has busted an international exotic animal trafficking racket and seized a huge consignment consisting of about 40 exotic and rare species animals. They include Wallaby, Chimpanzees, rare monkeys, exotic tortoise among others.

The consignment was seized from National Highway 31 in Rangia in Kamrup district of Assam and two persons arrested. They were driving two SUVs which were used to carrying the trafficked exotic animals; the vehicles had Delhi number plate and fake army sticker.

Assam police will hand over the animals to Forest department.

Police sources said, in the initial investigation, it has been found that the trafficked animal consignment was brought from Mizoram and was trafficked from Myanmar.

In April this year, forest officials in North Bengal had found three live kangaroos and a carcass of a dead kangaroo in Biakunthpur.

Again in April this year, 5 “exotic” monkeys and a wallaby were rescued from a vehicle in Assam’s Kamrup district and a person was arrested in this connection.
