Guwahati, April 5: The Assam election campaign took a sharp turn on Sunday as a war of words broke out between the Congress and the BJP, with allegations of offshore wealth triggering a legal showdown.
Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of routing money to Wyoming in the United States to evade taxes, raising questions over alleged undisclosed assets.
Addressing a press conference, Khera claimed that Sarma had amassed Rs 52,000 crore and parked it in Wyoming, a jurisdiction he described as favourable for avoiding income tax and protecting financial privacy. He also questioned the Chief Minister over alleged properties in Dubai and demanded a probe, invoking comparisons with high-profile economic offenders.
The BJP responded swiftly.
Sarma dismissed the allegations as “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies,” and announced that he and his wife would initiate both criminal and civil defamation proceedings within 48 hours against Khera.
In a statement posted on X, Sarma said the Congress attack reflected “deep frustration and panic” ahead of the elections, asserting that such claims would not mislead voters.

The Chief Minister also signalled confidence in the electoral outcome, stating that the BJP remains on course for a decisive mandate in Assam.
The exchange marks a clear escalation in the campaign, shifting the focus from policy to personal allegations, with legal action now entering the political battlefield.
As Assam moves closer to polling, the confrontation signals a more aggressive phase, where charges, countercharges, and courtroom battles could run parallel to the campaign trail.
