Williamnagar, Aug 15: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour in Resubelpara, with Power, Taxation & C&RD Minister AT Mondal gracing the occasion as the chief guest. He hoisted the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute from 20 parade contingents.
In his ceremonial address, Minister AT Mondal paid tribute to the nation’s and the state’s freedom fighters, as well as the defence forces, for their sacrifices in safeguarding the country’s integrity. He highlighted Meghalaya’s achievements and progress across various sectors and reaffirmed the state’s vision of becoming one of the top ten states in India by 2032. Mondal also called for active participation from all citizens to build a stronger and more progressive Meghalaya.
The celebration featured a series of cultural performances, with songs and dances reflecting patriotic pride. A standout highlight was a dramatic musical act on the life of Rani of Jhansi, performed by students of Montfort Higher Secondary School, Resubelpara. Their bold performance earned them the title of Best Cultural Troupe.
In the parade competition, Paschal Higher Secondary School won the award for Best Marching Contingent, followed by Montfort Higher Secondary School in second place and Dilma Apal Higher Secondary School in third.
The occasion also saw the felicitation of government employees from various departments for their dedication to duty. Athletes who brought laurels to the district at state-level competitions were honoured with citations and cash prizes.
The day’s events concluded in the evening with an exhibition cricket match between DC XI and SP XI, marking the end of the celebration.
