Tura, Jan 12: The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) Apex Committee has strongly condemned the mob attack that claimed a young life at Rajabala in Goalgaon area of West Garo Hills, calling it a “heinous and inhuman act” that threatens the very foundations of democracy and rule of law.
In a press release issued from its headquarters in Tura on Monday, the ADE said the incident has sent shockwaves across the district and raised serious concerns over public safety, unchecked vigilantism, and the effectiveness of law enforcement mechanisms. The organisation warned that failure to deliver swift justice would only embolden anti-social elements and erode public trust in governance
Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, ADE described the loss as “irreparable” and urged the State Government to provide immediate and adequate compensation as a humanitarian and moral responsibility. The compensation, it said, should account for the loss of life, livelihood, and the severe emotional trauma suffered by the family.
The civil society group placed three key demands before the authorities: a thorough, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the incident; identification, arrest, and prosecution of all those involved, directly or indirectly; and the award of the harshest exemplary punishment to serve as a deterrent against future acts of mob violence.
Calling mob justice “completely unacceptable in a democratic society,” ADE further urged the Meghalaya government to issue stern warnings and put in place strong preventive measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated anywhere in the state.
“The protection of life, dignity, and the rule of law must remain paramount,” the statement said, adding that the people of Meghalaya expect justice to prevail without delay.
