Guwahati, January 21: Mizoram’s Minister for Sports and Tourism, Lalnghinglova Hmar, on Wednesday at Mizoram House in Guwahati highlighted the state government’s efforts to promote sports tourism while addressing the media ahead of the upcoming Aizawl International Half Marathon, scheduled to be held on February 14.
The minister said the Mizoram government is organising the event under the name Aizawl International Half Marathon, describing it as a unique running experience compared to marathons held in metropolitan cities.
“The Mizoram government is organising a half marathon on the 14th of February, which we term as the Aizawl International Half Marathon. It is going to be very different because the run will take place along hilltops with good AQI and fresh air. The kind of feeling runners will experience here will be completely different from marathons in metros, which are usually run on crowded streets,” Hmar said.
Inviting participants and tourists from across the country, the minister added that the event aims to showcase Mizoram’s natural beauty and clean environment.
“I want to invite everyone to come and experience the Aizawl International Half Marathon and also to experience Mizoram,” he said.
Speaking on the growth of tourism in the state, Hmar said Mizoram has witnessed a significant rise in tourist arrivals over the past year, particularly after the inauguration of the railway station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2025.
“Mizoram has witnessed a sharp rise in tourism in the last year. We have seen more than a 96 per cent increase in tourist footfall compared to 2025. I am sure this number will grow even bigger in the next few years. I am very happy and excited about the future growth of tourism in my state,” the minister said.
The Aizawl International Half Marathon is expected to further strengthen Mizoram’s position as an emerging destination for sports tourism in the Northeast.
