Shillong, July 6: An alert Shillong resident helped police apprehend a suspected drug peddler before narcotics could allegedly be distributed, highlighting the role of public vigilance in tackling the city’s growing drug menace.

The incident occurred at Jacob’s Ladder on Saturday when a resident of Laban noticed a man behaving suspiciously while returning home. Sensing that something was amiss, the resident confronted the individual and immediately alerted the police.

Acting on the tip-off, personnel from Laitumkhrah Police Station rushed to the spot and detained the suspect.

Police reportedly recovered a substantial quantity of suspected narcotics along with capsules believed to have been packed for sale.

Investigators believe the timely intervention may have prevented the suspected drugs from reaching the streets and potentially falling into the hands of users.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the source of the suspected narcotics and whether the accused has links to a larger drug trafficking network.

The incident underscores the growing importance of public cooperation in supporting law enforcement’s efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse in Meghalaya.
