Amit Shah has authorised me to hold preliminary talks with ULFA: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Sept 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has authorised him to hold preliminary talks with the insurgent group ULFA.

After Sarma become the Chief Minister of Assam, he directly appealed ULFA to join in dialouge by shunning violence path.

“I have discussed with the Home Minister on the issue of holding peace talks with the ULFA. He has authorised me to initiate the preliminary talks with the ULFA,” Sarma said.

He added that if things move in a proper direction, the central government may get involved in the peace parleys with the ULFA at a later stage.

“Today I called on Adarniya Union HM Sri@AmitShah. I apprised him on how Assam has pursued vision of Adarniya PM Sri@narendramodi in our developmental journey & efforts to scale it up. Updated him on progress in implementation of various central schemes; & our war against drugs,” Sarma tweeted on Monday night.

Partly involved in peace talks with NSCN-IM

On Monday, Sarma had a discussion with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to hold discussion with NSCN-IM.

Talking to reporters, Sarma said that he is partly involved in the ongoing peace process with the NSCN-IM but was not officially holding any negotiation with the Naga rebel group.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the Northeast version of the NDA where major parties of the region are constituents.

Sarma said he would travel to Nagaland on Tuesday as convenor of the NEDA to assess the political situation of the state after opposition parties too became part of the government.

Mishra meets NSCN-IM leaders

Former special director of the Intelligence Bureau, AK Mishra and the NSCN-IM leadership led by Th Muivah met in Dimapur on Monday.

Recently Nagaland governor R N Ravi was shifted to Tamil Nadu. He was an interlocutor of Naga peace talks. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has been given additional charge of Nagaland.

Its seems to be a proactive stand by Centre towards solving the Naga political issue.

On the other hand, Niki Sumi, the president of the Niki Sumi faction of the NSCN-K said that separate agreements with different factions of the Naga political groups cannot bring final and inclusive solution to the Naga political issue.
