Guwahati, Feb 4: The Arunachal Pradesh government has formally granted permission to capture the tiger that killed a head constable along the Roing–Mayodia road inside Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary.
The decision was taken after the big cat fatally attacked Chikseng Manapang, a Head Constable posted at WT Police Station, Roing, around midnight on February 2 while he was travelling through the sanctuary stretch.
Citing provisions under Section 11(1)(a) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Chief Wildlife Warden of the state authorised the Divisional Forest Officer of Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary to capture the tiger for rehabilitation.
The operation will be carried out strictly in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
Senior officials of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, including the PCCF & Head of Forest Force and PCCF (Wildlife), reviewed the ground situation at the Itanagar headquarters and directed immediate action.
Veterinary experts from Itanagar Zoo and CBRC, Pakke Tiger Reserve, along with trained STF personnel from Namdapha Tiger Reserve, have been deployed with tranquilising equipment to assist in the operation. A technical expert committee has also been constituted to monitor developments.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution while travelling through the affected stretch and to avoid approaching wildlife.
The state government has announced ₹10 lakh ex-gratia assistance to the victim’s family.
