Guwahati, May 23: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) has apprehended Assam Civil Services (ACS) officer Lachit Kumar Das, Assistant Director at the Directorate of Land Records and Surveys, while allegedly accepting a bribe in Guwahati.
According to vigilance officials, Das had allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh from an individual for issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in connection with an inter-religious land transfer case. The amount was later allegedly negotiated down to Rs 50,000.
After refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate, which verified the allegations and laid a trap at the Directorate of Land Records office in Rupnagar.
Das was allegedly caught red-handed inside his office chamber immediately after accepting Rs 45,000 as part of the demanded amount. The tainted cash was recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses.
Following the arrest, vigilance teams conducted an overnight raid at Das’s residence in Guwahati’s Anil Nagar area. During the nearly 12-hour-long search operation, officials recovered Rs 1,18,30,000 in cash from the house, including Rs 48.38 lakh found inside a locker.
The total recovery during the operation stood at Rs 1,66,68,150, officials said.
