Guwahati, May 23: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Friday announced that the state government will establish a dedicated “counter-radicalisation cell” aimed at protecting vulnerable youths from extremist influences and promoting constitutional values, social harmony and national unity.
Addressing the 16th session of Assam Assembly, Acharya reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding Assam’s “jati, mati and bheti” — identity, land and homeland.

“My government remains committed to safeguarding the identity, land rights, security and constitutional interests of the people of Assam, particularly the tribal, indigenous and other protected communities,” he said.
He added that over the next five years, the government would further strengthen the legal and administrative framework for the protection of indigenous rights and demographic security.
The Governor also said the government would intensify measures against unlawful encroachment on indigenous land, organised cross-border cattle smuggling and activities considered detrimental to social harmony and public order.
Acharya further stated that steps would be taken to implement the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, to “expedite the detection and push-back of illegal immigrants”.
The Governor’s first address in the 16th Assam Assembly was briefly disrupted after Opposition MLAs from the Congress and Raijor Dal staged a walkout. About five minutes into the speech, the legislators entered the well of the House, demanding that the government address issues such as inflation instead of highlighting its achievements.
