Guwahati, Jan 11: Panic gripped residents of Assam’s Cachar district after a large gas balloon, allegedly originating from Bangladesh, was recovered from an agricultural field in Borkhola on Sunday morning.
The balloon was found in the Subedarbasti area of Masimpur under Borkhola, drawing immediate attention due to its unusual size and foreign markings. Locals said the object descended slowly into a field, prompting fear and speculation about its origin and purpose.
Alarmed villagers informed the Village Defence Party (VDP), which in turn alerted the police. A police team soon reached the spot, followed by Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das.
By the time authorities arrived, a large crowd had gathered, with residents expressing concern and drawing various conclusions about the balloon. Preliminary examination revealed that it carried the name and motif of a school from Bangladesh’s Sylhet district, along with photographs of three individuals and text written in Bengali.
The school named on the balloon is Ghilachhara Dwimukhi High School, Sylhet, which, according to some social media posts, recently marked its 65th anniversary.
VDP secretary Suman Das of Masimpur said locals panicked after noticing that the balloon appeared to be from Bangladesh. “They called me to inspect it. I immediately informed the police, and in the presence of the SP, the balloon was taken into police custody. It had Bengali writings and photos of three people,” he said.
Police have seized the balloon and launched an investigation to determine how it crossed the international border and landed in the area, and whether the incident has any security implications.
