Assam CM announces polygamy bill, criticises Priyank Kharge, warns on Lachit Sena

Guwahati, Oct 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the state government will introduce a law against polygamy during the Assembly session beginning November 25, and indicated stringent penalties for remarriage without a legal divorce.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “We have opposed the practice of polygamy, and therefore a new law will be introduced in the Assembly session scheduled for November 25. According to this proposed legislation, if a person attempts to remarry without obtaining a legal divorce, they will face imprisonment for seven years or more.”

Sarma added, “We are also aware that the Election Commission of India will hold a press conference today. If the schedule for the state elections is announced nationwide, we will welcome the decision. We have already conveyed our stance to the Central Government in this regard.”

Referring to Congress leader Priyank Kharge’s recent remarks, the Chief Minister said, “Priyank Kharge is a first-class idiot; his recent remarks are highly unfortunate and deeply insulting to the youth of Assam. By claiming that Assam lacks educated and competent youth, he has disrespected an entire generation of hardworking Assamese youth. The Congress party has yet to comment on this matter, and we are examining whether legal action can be initiated against him for his derogatory statement.”

On the Lachit Sena, Sarma warned, “Lachit Sena’s activities are very serious. We have observed their conduct closely. We are concerned about their growing influence—it may be that we will have to ban it, as we did with ULFA. Members of Lachit Sena have disrupted the environment and caused problems for businessmen in Assam. We will take a firm decision and act seriously.”
