Guwahati, Apr 2: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Assam’s election campaign after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), alleging controversial social media activity linked to the family of its Central Guwahati candidate Kunki Choudhary.
Speaking to reporters in Khowang, Sarma said he had no objection to Choudhary’s mother, Sujata Gurung Choudhary, being a resident of Sikkim, but alleged that her social media posts were “hurtful to sentiments.” He claimed that her posts included images of beef consumption and remarks that, according to him, challenged Sanatan Dharma.
The chief minister further alleged that she had expressed support for individuals such as Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, both of whom have been at the centre of past controversies. He also claimed that certain posts referenced the sensitive “chicken neck” corridor and included remarks questioning religious beliefs.
The allegations have intensified the political slugfest in the run-up to the polls.
Responding to the charges, Kunki Choudhary strongly refuted the claims, calling them “false and baseless.”
“I have learned that during a media interaction, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made allegations against my mother and me, which are false. It appears they have accepted defeat in the Central Guwahati constituency,” she said.
Choudhary, who recently entered politics, added that she has been receiving strong public support. “I came into politics just 15 days ago, and the people of Assam, especially Central Guwahati, have showered their love on me,” she said.
