Guwahati, March 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday predicted that the Congress would secure only 15–17 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, expressing confidence in a sweeping victory for the BJP, particularly in Upper Assam.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the Congress would remain below the 20-seat mark, while the AIUDF could win 5–6 seats and Raijor Dal may secure one seat in Dhing. He added that the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is unlikely to win any seats.
“Congress will get 15–17 seats. In Upper Assam, BJP will clean sweep,” he said.
The Chief Minister also claimed that sections of minority voters are hesitant to support the Congress in the current political climate.
On the issue of illegal immigration, Sarma reiterated the government’s stance, stating that eviction drives would target “illegal Bangladeshi settlers” and not Indian citizens. He asserted that efforts to curb cross-border infiltration would continue as an ongoing administrative and security priority.
“As long as Bangladesh exists, infiltration may continue. This is not a time-bound exercise but a continuous effort,” he said, adding that enforcement measures would be sustained.
Meanwhile, the BJP has intensified its campaign across the state, with several star campaigners arriving in Assam to energize party workers ahead of the polls.
Assam will go to the polls on April 9 across all 126 Assembly constituencies in a single-phase election.
