Guwahati, Nov 8: The Assam police on Wednesday arrested Congress MLA Aftab Uddin Mollah for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the Hindu priests and saints during a public meeting in the state’s Goalpara district.
Based on a FIR filed against the MLA at the Dispur police station by one Dipak Kumar Das, Mollah was arrested by Guwahati police reportedly from the residence of another Congress MLA.
Das in his FIR alleged that Mollah has deliberately and maliciously made his speech against the Hindu priests and saints which has hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus.
The complainant further alleged that Mollah’s speech has promoted enmity among the Hindus and the Muslims which is likely to disturb the public tranquillity.
Speaking to media persons, Guwahati Commissioner of Police (CP) Diganta Barah said, “The MLA has been arrested this morning. A case has been registered against him at the Dispur police station under sections 295(A) (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153(A)(1)(b) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), and 505(2) (Intent to create or promote on grounds of religion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We will produce before the court later in the day.”
The MLA while delivering his speech at a public meeting in Goalpara district had allegedly said that the Hindu people do bad things in the society while the Muslims don’t. Mollah allegedly made derogatory remarks while taking a dig at All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal. He further said that the priests and ‘namgharias’ (Vaishnava monks) do bad things crossing all borders.
Though Mollah later sought a public apology after his alleged derogatory remarks sparked an outrage throughout Assam, state Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah served him a show cause notice asking him to reply immediately as to why the grand old party should not take disciplinary action against him.
