Guwahati, Feb 16: In a significant political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior Congress leader Bhupen Bora has resigned from the party, dealing a major blow to the state unit.
Bora submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday.

Soon after stepping down, he removed his Congress designation from his social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), a move widely interpreted as signalling a complete break from the party.
His resignation comes within days of the party high command entrusting him with the responsibility of stitching together an opposition alliance for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Sources within the party indicated that Bora was reportedly dissatisfied with the direction of alliance negotiations in the state.
He had recently been tasked with leading discussions with opposition parties, including Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal and other regional outfits.

The development also comes just two days ahead of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s scheduled visit to Assam on February 18.
Bhupen Bora served as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) from July 24, 2021, to 2024. He was a two-time MLA, representing the Bihpuria constituency from 2006 to 2016, and was regarded as one of the prominent organisational faces of the Congress in Assam.
Further details are awaited.
