Dibrugarh, Feb 16: A hardcore insurgent belonging to the NSCN (Akato) faction surrendered before security forces in Khonsa town of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on Sunday, officials said.
The surrendered cadre has been identified as SS Sergeant Inno Mosha Pangsa (Chang), 23, a resident of Tuensang village in Tuensang district of Nagaland. He had joined the outfit on April 19, 2022.
According to an official statement, credible intelligence inputs were received from 3 CIB and further corroborated by 19 WEU around 12 noon on February 15 regarding the presence of a hardcore insurgent in the general area of Khonsa town. Acting on the inputs, the Khonsa Battalion launched a focused operation.
“Upon reaching the suspected location, own sources were activated and tasked to establish contact with the insurgent and persuade him to surrender,” the official said.
He added that sustained pressure and continuous negotiations eventually convinced the insurgent to shun the path of violence and return to the mainstream.
Following his surrender, Pangsa was taken into custody at the Battalion Headquarters in Khonsa.
During the surrender, he handed over one 0.32 calibre pistol, four rounds of ammunition, one walkie-talkie set with charger, and an appointment letter, officials said.
The individual was later handed over to Khonsa Police Station for further investigation.
Security officials said the successful surrender highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-based operations and the persuasive approach adopted by the Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles. The force, in coordination with other agencies, reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region while encouraging misguided youth to return to the mainstream.
