Assam: Man murders friend, cabbie’s timely alert leads to his arrest

Guwahati, Dec 30: In a sensational incident, Guwahati police has arrested a man who allegedly murdered his long-time friend over an alleged monetary dispute, dumped the body in a sack, and called a private cab driven by a youth from his native village and dumped the body in a jungle 35 KM outside Guwahati.

The arrest came after the cab driver, who was known to the accused, after dropping the accused back at Beltola locality of Guwahati drove straight to the nearest police station and reported the incident.

According to police sources, the murder took place on Thursday morning and the driver was called by the accused over phone and booked his cab ‘offline’ since they both knew each other.

The cab was registered with leading car aggregators Ola and Uber but this particular trip was on a online trip, police sources added.

The accused, identified as Hitesh Das, then directed the cab driver to Kamalpur, where he discarded the bag allegedly containing the body deep into the bush.

“He (the accused) is from my native village in Nalbari district and he called me to book my cab offline to go to Village so I agreed. He put a suspicious looking sack in the bootspace of the cab. He told it is a dead pig. Then when he stopped to dump the sack I saw blood outside. I questioned him and he confessed that this is the dead body of his friend whom he has killed in a heated argument over some money dispute. He threatened me of dire consequences if I reveal this. I got extremely tensed,” the driver identified as Khagen Das told reporters.

Following this, a police team was alerted and was able to track down the accused and arrested him.

Speaking to the media, the Commissioner of Police, Diganta Borah, said, “Today, in the evening, a cab driver came and informed us that one of his acquaintances have taken something in a bag by his car which he suspected to be a dead body. The accused took the bag and dumped it near an area close to Baihata Chariali…based on the informer we started our investigation and arrested the accused,” added the Commissioner.

Further, based on preliminary investigation, the accused accepted to the crime of murdering his own friend. The accused and the victim were working together for the last 12 years, following which there was a scuffle due to monetary issues, police sources added.

The accused and victim were both DTH technicians and engaged in other odd jobs.
