Shillong, June 5, 2026: True committed leadership never stops, no matter the obstacles, until the last breath. This was powerfully demonstrated by Rakkam A. Sangma, one of Meghalaya’s young, dynamic and rising leaders.
Hailing from a humble family background, Mr. Sangma rose from the grassroots to become a Member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He earlier served as Chairman of the Meghalaya State Health Advisory Board and was re-elected in 2023. He later took charge as Cabinet Minister for Education, General Administration Department, etc., under the Chief Ministership of Shri Conrad K. Sangma.
Known as a proactive and people-centric Minister who always lends an ear to the voices of citizens, Sangma enjoys wide popularity across the State.
Upholding the spirit of collective leadership, when the need arose due to changing political dynamics and to provide equal opportunity within one family, he accepted the directive of the Party High Command without any hesitation and stepped down as Cabinet Minister to make way for another member of the Party as a family. He subsequently resumed charge as Chairman of MREGC (Planning Department) Government of Meghalaya to continue public service.
Despite suffering a leg injury while playing football in Shillong, he has been under medical treatment for the past nine months, moving from one hospital to another. His health is yet to fully recover but a leader who lives in action cannot be confined.
Even more that emotional chapter unfolded on June 5, 2026, despite poor health, he presided over the Committee on Environment of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in the morning. In the evening, he joined as Chief Guest for the 14th Anniversary Celebration of Hid Foundation Shillong where also was celebrated a World Environment Day and special event to felicitation of the Players of Risyon SC at the State Convention Centre Shillong.
Rakkam A. Sangma set a powerful example that day. He was completely unwell and could have skipped the event. But believing that his presence, despite hardship, could bring smiles and inspiration to many, he attended the programme as Chief Guest with an injured leg.
