Dudhnoi, May 28: In a tragic incident, the body of a missing 10th-grade student, Pulak Basumatary, was recovered from the Dudhnoi River near Chaklapara Ghat on Wednesday morning. The 16-year-old boy, a resident of Kharachaklapara village in Dudhnoi, had gone to bathe in the river with two friends when he suddenly went missing.

The incident occurred around 11 AM. After Pulak disappeared beneath the water, his friends immediately raised an alarm. Locals rushed to the spot and began a frantic search while also informing the police. The Dudhnoi Police then alerted the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Before SDRF personnel could begin their operation, local residents managed to recover the boy’s body. The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow in the community, particularly due to claims that Pulak drowned after falling into a deep pit created by illegal sand mining in the riverbed.

Locals allege that sand mining by machines has led to the formation of hidden underwater pits, making the river increasingly dangerous for the public.

Notably, this is not the first such incident. Few days back, a couple and another student had reportedly drowned at the same location under similar circumstances.

Meanwhile, Pulak’s family has expressed their anguish over the preventable nature of the tragedy.

This incident has caused widespread shock and grief in the region. It has also renewed calls for stricter regulation and enforcement against illegal sand mining in Dudhnoi.
