Guwahati, May 27: The indefinite sit-in protest by the ONGC Purbanchal Employees’ Association (OPEA) at the Assam Asset headquarters in Nazira has entered its eighth day, with no resolution in sight. The employees are demanding the regularisation of tenure-based field operators and paramedical staff, reinstatement of the three-hour overtime allowance discontinued in February 2025, and resumption of the recruitment process halted for approximately 300 sanctioned posts since 2023.
OPEA General Secretary Sanjeeb Boruah emphasised that the management’s continued outsourcing is depriving local youths of job opportunities. He also highlighted concerns over workplace safety due to the unavailability of essential personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety shoes, coveralls, and gloves.
Despite a team from ONGC headquarters visiting Assam on April 29 for discussions, no breakthrough has been achieved. The union has warned of escalating the protest to include a hunger strike and a ‘tool-down’ protest if their demands remain unaddressed.
The protest, which began with black badge demonstrations before escalating to a full-fledged sit-in from May 21, has not yet disrupted ONGC operations, according to the union.
As the sit-in continues, the employees’ union remains firm on its nine-point charter of demands, urging the management to take immediate action to address their concerns.
