Guwahati, May 27: In a swift pre-dawn operation on Monday, the Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an infiltration attempt by a group of Bangladeshi nationals along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district.
BSF personnel deployed along the international border detected suspicious movement from the Bangladeshi side and swiftly responded, challenging the group as they attempted to cross into Indian territory. Confronted by the alert troops, the intruders retreated without further incident.
The operation underscores the heightened vigilance maintained by the BSF in one of the most sensitive stretches of the international border. It also comes amid circulating social media videos purportedly showing over a dozen individuals standing near the zero line, beyond the barbed-wire fencing, raising fresh concerns about border security in the district.
In recent days, Assam Police and border authorities have intensified checks and operations. According to police sources, at least 150 suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been pushed back across the border at various points in Assam. Over the weekend, Assam Police conducted a major operation, detaining scores of individuals suspected to be illegal immigrants. While officials described it as a routine document verification drive, the scale and timing of the effort suggest growing pressure to address cross-border movement.
Officials say the BSF remains on high alert, with stepped-up patrols and surveillance along the porous border stretch, which has witnessed periodic attempts at illegal crossings.
