Assam Opposition holds strategy meet ahead of counting, alleges bid to ‘steal mandate’

GUWAHATI, May 2: The Assam Opposition Alliance on Saturday held a key strategy meeting in Guwahati ahead of vote counting, alleging possible attempts to “steal the mandate” and asserting confidence of a decisive victory when results are declared on May 4.

The meeting, convened by the state unit of the Indian National Congress, focused on safeguarding the electoral process and preparing for the counting exercise over the next two days.

Top leaders from Assam and across the country attended, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh, Assam Congress election in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, and AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

Addressing reporters, Gaurav Gogoi described the moment as “crucial,” alleging that attempts could be made to manipulate the electoral mandate during counting.

“We must ensure that any effort to steal the mandate of the people of Assam is resisted with full force. We had raised several complaints earlier—while many were not acted upon, our preparedness has helped block multiple such attempts,” he said.

He added that senior observers from different states, along with delegations from the Congress leadership, would be deployed across districts to monitor the counting process and ensure transparency. However, he declined to disclose specific strategies, terming the deliberations an “internal discussion.”

Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi expressed confidence that the alliance would cross the 70-seat mark.

“We will win. Despite government propaganda, we are confident of securing more than 70 seats. Exit polls are based on small samples and do not reflect the people’s mandate,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi dismissed exit polls as “misleading” and politically motivated.

“We are forming the government with a clear majority. These exit polls are bogus and meant to create psychological pressure on party workers and officials,” he said.
