Assam: Opposition leader flags alleged deletion of voters’ names during electoral roll revision Nazira

Guwahati, Jan 22: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has written to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam alleging large-scale irregularities in the ongoing Summary/Special Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Nazira Assembly constituency, including the alleged wrongful deletion of voters’ names.

In his letter, Saikia expressed concern over what he described as “grave irregularities” during the revision exercise being conducted with reference to January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. While highlighting Nazira Assembly Constituency No. 97 as a key area of concern, he also referred to reports of similar issues emerging from other parts of the state.

“It has been observed that during the ongoing Summary/Special Revision of the electoral rolls, serious irregularities have come to light in and around Nazira Assembly Constituency, with reports of similar problems from other constituencies across Assam,” Saikia stated.

Citing Article 326 of the Constitution, which guarantees universal adult suffrage, Saikia stressed that every eligible Indian citizen above the age of 18 has a constitutional right to be enrolled as a voter. He further noted that this right is protected under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, through prescribed procedures for inclusion, deletion, and correction of entries in the electoral rolls.

“The revision exercise is not intended to be exclusionary, nor should it impose an unfair evidentiary burden on electors,” the opposition leader said.

Saikia pointed to a specific instance from Ward No. 9 of Deopani Gohain Gaon under the Nazira constituency, where several permanent residents reportedly discovered that their names had been removed from the electoral rolls.

According to the letter, these voters submitted written representations to the District Election Officer on January 21, 2026, seeking restoration of their names, with copies also forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar.

“This itself reflects the seriousness of the wrongful exclusions taking place in the Nazira constituency,” he added.

The opposition leader also alleged the involvement of local BJP leaders in the deletion of voters’ names. He claimed that the affected individuals are indigenous residents who have been living in the area since the pre-independence period.

“During discussions with the concerned Booth Level Officers (BLOs), it was reported that the BLOs themselves had no clear information regarding the reasons for such removals,” Saikia wrote, raising concerns over transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process during the revision process.

Saikia urged the Chief Electoral Officer to intervene and ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised during the electoral roll revision exercise.
