Assam Polls 2026: I-T Dept sets up 24×7 control room to crack down on black money

Guwahati, March 17: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, the Income Tax Department has stepped up surveillance by setting up a 24×7 control room in Guwahati to monitor and curb the use of black money during the poll process.

The move is part of coordinated efforts to support the Election Commission of India in ensuring free and fair elections scheduled for April 9, 2026.

Officials said the Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), North Eastern Region, will maintain a strict vigil on the movement of unaccounted cash and valuables across the state during the Model Code of Conduct period.

This includes tracking unaccounted cash, bullion and precious metals, and high-value items suspected to be used for electoral influence.

The dedicated control room has been set up at Aayakar Bhawan, Christian Basti, GS Road, Guwahati, and will remain operational throughout the election period.

Authorities said informants can remain anonymous, but stressed that inputs must be credible and actionable. The department said the initiative aims to prevent illicit money from influencing voters and strengthen democratic processes.

With election campaigning intensifying, officials expect increased movement of cash and valuables, making public vigilance crucial.
