Must read

Boko, April 29: Ahead of the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam, three major Rabha organizations in the state – All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU), All Rabha Women’s Council (ARWC), and the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee (SSDC) have declared unconditional support to the candidates of the BJP-led alliance.

In a joint press conference held at their headquarters in Dudhnoi (Goalpara) on Sunday, the top leaders of these organizations made this announcement. They announced that they will support the BJP alliance candidates contesting from the Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Dhubri Lok Sabha constituencies in the third phase.

A joint statement said, “Considering the assurances given by the Chief Minister during the meeting with our organizations on 25th April 2024 to resolve long-pending Rabha issues, and the Central government’s move to include Rabha Hasong Council under the Sixth Schedule, we three Rabha groups have decided to support the BJP candidates – Bijuli Kalita Medi (Guwahati), Jayanta Basumatary (Kokrajhar), Javed Islam (Dhubri) and Phanibhushan Choudhury (Barpeta). We call upon all Rabha people to vote for these candidates.”

ARSU President Matilal Baksho cited several reasons for extending support. He said the core demand of the Rabha community is to bring the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. In this regard, the BJP government led by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma has already taken a cabinet decision and sent a proposal to the Central government to grant constitutional status to the Rabha Hasong area with utmost importance.

Moreover, based on the new National Education Policy 2020, the government has decided to introduce the Rabha language as the medium of education at the pre-primary level. It has also reserved three assembly seats in the Rabha Hasong area for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

With their influential base among the Rabha community in Lower Assam districts like Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Barpeta and Guwahati, the support announced by ARSU, ARWC and SSDC holds significant weight ahead of the third phase polling in these constituencies on May 7, 2024.
