Guwahati, Aug 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed that the state has witnessed a significant decline in crime rates and a sharp rise in convictions since 2021, marking an overall improvement in law and order.
Taking to X, Sarma said, “Compared to 2021, there has been a marked decline in crimes and considerable improvement in convictions.”

According to the chief minister, Assam has recorded a 66.8 per cent fall in the crime rate per lakh population, while the conviction rate under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has risen to 56.2 per cent. He further highlighted that the state has achieved a 90.09 per cent reduction in pending cases since 2021.
“These figures, as of July 2025, reflect a comprehensive overhaul of crime management and judicial processes across the state,” officials said.
The rise in conviction rates suggests improved investigation quality and stronger case preparation by the Assam Police, while the reduction in case backlogs indicates enhanced judicial efficiency.
“Earlier, there were many pending cases which took years for conviction, but in the last one year, conviction rates have improved compared to previous years,” Sarma noted.
The chief minister reiterated that the Assam Police remains committed to ensuring a safe and crime-free state.
