Aizawl, Aug 19: In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) seized 502 cases of foreign origin cigarettes in general area Ruantlang and kelkang- Khaungleng Road, Champhai district in Mizoram on Thursday.
The operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs department Champhai based on specific information.
Approximate market value of the sized foreign origin cigarettes is Rs. 6,52,60,000. The recovered items have been handed over to Customs Preventive Force Champhai, District Champhai. They also detained three individuals for further legal proceedings.
Ongoing smuggling of drugs is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’, have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
