Assam to roll out 12,500 PNG connections in major cities amid LPG supply concerns

Must read

Guwahati, March 19: In a significant push towards cleaner and more dependable household fuel, the Assam government has announced a phased expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections across key urban centres, citing shifting LPG supply dynamics and broader geopolitical concerns.

Following guidelines issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the state has rolled out a public notice detailing the expansion plan, which will cover cities including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Tezpur.

The initiative will be implemented by Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL), Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited (PBGPL), and North East Gas Distribution Company Limited (NEGDCL), targeting around 12,500 new PNG connections in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already in place.

According to officials, residents in the notified areas can apply through QR codes provided in the public notice or by contacting the respective agencies directly. A common toll-free helpline — 1800-547-1266 — has also been launched to facilitate the application process.

The expansion is being positioned as a strategic shift to reduce reliance on LPG cylinders while offering households a safer, more affordable, and uninterrupted fuel supply.

With rollout scheduled to begin in phases from July, the project is expected to bolster Assam’s energy security and enhance ease of living in its fast-growing urban regions.
