Dibrugarh, March 18: The resignation of senior Congress leader and Nagaon Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi drew a measured yet pointed response from Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday.
He termed the development “unfortunate,” while asserting that the party’s mission to unseat Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remains firmly on track.
Bordoloi, the sitting Member of Parliament from the Nagaon constituency, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, a day after resigning from the Indian National Congress.

Gogoi, who arrived at Dibrugarh Airport from Delhi, spoke to reporters upon landing and struck a tone of restraint mixed with defiance.
“Just two years ago, the Congress party offered him the opportunity to contest the Lok Sabha seat from Nagaon. He is a sitting Member of Parliament, and the people of Nagaon voted for him. In the current election, the Congress also offered an opportunity to a member of his family to contest the Vidhan Sabha polls. If our current Nagaon MP wants to see Himanta Biswa Sarma continue as Chief Minister, that is his decision — though it is rather unfortunate,” Gogoi said.
However, Gogoi stressed that the exit of one leader would not derail the party’s momentum.

“This election is much more important than one person. It is about freeing Assam from the clutches of Himanta Biswa Sarma — from politics driven by fear and intimidation, and from the ‘mafia raj’ that has crept in during his tenure,” he said.
Downplaying the defection, Gogoi described it as a personal decision rather than a structural setback for the party.
“I don’t think a difference of opinion over a single seat is reason enough to leave a party and join its rival,” he added.
