Meghalaya singer Cherry Mrong to tour four Indian cities under state-backed music initiative

Must read

Shillong, July 5: Meghalaya’s push to promote homegrown musical talent on the national stage received another boost as young singer Cherry Mrong announced her Groove & Bloom Tour 2026, a four-city concert series across India under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (CMMGMP).

The tour will see the singer perform two shows in Delhi on July 29 and 30, followed by concerts in Kolkata on July 31 and Bengaluru on August 2, offering audiences outside the Northeast a glimpse into Meghalaya’s contemporary music scene.

The initiative highlights the state’s growing efforts to help independent musicians overcome one of their biggest hurdles—taking their music beyond Meghalaya. National tours are often out of reach for emerging artists because of high travel and production costs, but CMMGMP is providing financial and institutional support to connect local talent with audiences across the country.

Announcing the tour, Cherry Mrong said each performance would be an opportunity to carry the stories, culture and spirit of Meghalaya to new audiences while creating meaningful musical experiences. She also invited music lovers in every city to join the journey.

The tour is being organised by Nokpante Productions under CMMGMP, with support from Meghalayan Age Ltd. and Meghalaya Tourism. Cherry also thanked Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for backing the aspirations of young musicians in the state.

Over the past few years, the Meghalaya government has stepped up investment in the state’s music ecosystem through funding, performance platforms and artist development programmes. Officials say the initiative aims to position Meghalaya as India’s “music capital” while creating sustainable career opportunities for local musicians.

Cherry Mrong’s national tour is the latest example of that strategy, giving an emerging artist the opportunity to showcase Meghalaya’s musical identity on stages across the country and expand the state’s cultural footprint beyond the Northeast.
