Guwahati, Aug 16: Four people were injured after Naga miscreants attacked them without provocation in the Merapani area along the Assam–Nagaland border in Golaghat district on Friday.
Among the injured, one youth, identified as Prakash Boro, sustained a bullet injury after being shot with an air gun. He is currently undergoing treatment at Golaghat Civil Hospital.
According to reports, the group of youths had gone from Kadamguri area in Assam to a nearby forested location in Nagaland for a picnic. On their way back, they were intercepted and assaulted by a group of Naga men.
“We went to the Merapani area for a picnic. Suddenly, three Naga people appeared in front of us and asked for our Aadhaar cards. We told them that we lived just a kilometre away from the area. Without any reason, they started beating us and opened fire. One of our friends was shot and is now in hospital,” said Subroto Nayak, one of the victims.
Nayak added, “All three of them were armed. We had gone there to celebrate Independence Day. They assaulted us badly and even fired at our vehicle, damaging it.”
Authorities confirmed that the attack took place without provocation, sparking outrage among local residents. Investigations are underway, and the incident has once again raised concerns about safety along the Assam–Nagaland border.
This is not the first such attack in the area. Earlier, Assamese people had also been targeted by Naga miscreants in Merapani.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated along the border on Monday night after unidentified miscreants set fire to a house in Thuribari village, Uriamghat, and allegedly opened fire, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.
