Shillong, May 23: In a significant boost for Meghalaya’s indigenous languages, Khasi and Garo have now been included in the CBSE Scheme of Studies, allowing affiliated schools to offer them as optional third languages under the board’s new language framework from the 2026-27 academic year.
Under the updated list available on the CBSE OASIS portal, Khasi has been placed at serial number 46 and Garo at 47 in the language list under the new three-language (R1-R2-R3) scheme that will come into effect next year.
The inclusion comes after concern in Meghalaya over the earlier exclusion of the two native languages from the recognized subject framework under CBSE’s revised policy. The state government had taken up the matter with the board formally and also held discussions with CBSE authorities.
That effort appears to have paid off.
With the change, more than 100 CBSE-affiliated schools in Meghalaya can now officially offer Khasi or Garo as part of the third-language basket under the board’s scheme, alongside other approved languages. CBSE has already made updating the OASIS portal mandatory for schools as part of the rollout of the language policy under the National Education Policy and the National Curriculum Framework.
For Meghalaya, this is more than just a bureaucratic update tucked away in a portal list.
The move is expected to strengthen mother-tongue education and lend greater academic recognition to Khasi and Garo within India’s national school system, while also supporting wider efforts to preserve and promote the state’s tribal languages.
Sometimes policy changes come dressed in acronyms and circulars. This one, tucked between serial numbers 46 and 47, carries something more meaningful — a small but important recognition of identity in a national classroom.
